I want a Commercial Role - Navigating the First Career Move as a Newly Qualified ACA

However, deciding on the right path can be overwhelming, with conflicting advice and a variety of options to consider.

The Career Options Available

As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, newly qualified ACAs have several potential career paths, including:

  • Group Accountant

  • Financial Accountant

  • Management Accountant

  • Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)

  • Commercial Analyst

The choice made at this stage will influence future career progression, making it crucial to consider long-term ambitions before deciding.

The Appeal of Commercial Roles

Most ACAs in their first year post-qualification aspire to move into a commercial role within industry. While this term can mean different things, for many, it refers to a position that focuses on value-adding analysis rather than financial reporting.

This means working with the numbers prepared by Financial, Management, or Group Accountants—translating them into insights that drive business performance. However, securing these highly sought-after roles straight away can be a challenge.

The Reality of the Job Market

Many newly qualified ACAs become frustrated when the only opportunities they hear about seem too reporting-focused. After investing time searching job boards, meeting recruiters, and registering with agencies, they often feel they’re not being introduced to the commercial roles they really want.

The reality is that most roles at the £45k–£50k level (the typical market rate for a 0–1 year post-qualified ACA) will include a reporting element. The degree of reporting varies depending on the role:

  • Statutory Reporting: Primarily focused on financial statements and compliance.

  • Financial/Management Accounting: A mix of reporting and operational finance.

  • FP&A: More commercially driven but still requires a solid understanding of financial reporting.

While pure commercial roles do exist, they are in the minority. More often than not, the best route into them is through roles with a reporting foundation.

The Long-Term Perspective

Looking at finance leaders today - Finance Directors, CFOs, and even CEOs - many started their post-ACA careers in financial reporting roles. These positions provided them with the experience needed to understand a company’s financial position and prepare accurate financial statements.

Most of these leaders spent 12-24 months in reporting roles before transitioning into commercial finance. This experience gave them an edge later in their careers, helping them secure senior positions with broader strategic responsibilities.

What’s the Best Move for You?

If your long-term goal is to become a Finance Director, CFO, or CEO, ask yourself:

  • What skills and experience will help me get there?

  • Will gaining statutory reporting experience give me a competitive advantage?

  • Am I prioritising short-term preferences over long-term career growth?

Having a clear career vision and the self-awareness to follow the right steps will set you up for success. While a first role in industry might not be your ultimate goal, choosing the right stepping stone can make all the difference in securing the career you want in the long run.
